Description
A modified single stage impactor referred to as NIOSH-6 (N6) can be used in place of the original 6-stage impactor and results in equivalent volumetric data with fewer plates used.
Close Information
The Single Stage (N6) Microbial Sampler was designed by NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) for estimating the total concentration of viable airborne microorganisims. The sampler has been used over a wide range of airborne fungal concentrations (10 to 3000 CFU/m3) and found to be comparable to the standard 6-stage impactor in terms of both precision and accuracy for estimating total airborne fungal concentration.
The N6 also meets specifications developed by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) Committee on Bioaerosols for the sampling and assessment of bioaerosols in the workplace. The sampler typically is recommended for the detection of fungi, bacteria and thermophilic actinomycetes.
A 100 x 15 mm plastic Petri dish (or glass Petri dish designed for the 6-stage sampler) containing culture media is placed on top of the N6 base plate and at least 0.1 m3 of sample is sampled through the impactor at 28.3 liters per minute (1 CFM). The N6 inertial impactor obtains a sharp cut-off diameter of 0.65 µm.
APPLICATIONS
The N6 consists of an aluminum inlet cone, one jet stage and a base plate with hose barb held together by three spring clamps and sealed with O-ring gaskets. The jet stage has 400 precision machined jet orifices. The N6 Single Stage Sampler operates at a flow rate of 28.3 lpm (1 CFM) and provides a well documented cut-off diameter of 0.65 µm.
