Very few laboratory procedures can be conducted without handling liquids. Almost all chemical reactions, analyses and preparative work involve the handling of a solution of some description. In some cases, the exact quantity or concentration of a solution is immaterial, but in a great many cases particular precise volumes of a liquid must be made up, measured, and transported with a high degree of accuracy. Some volumes that are handled routinely in the laboratory are very small, and therefore require particular care and attention.
